BRL Architects have been commissioned by the Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead to design a new leisure facility within a green belt site known as Braywick Park. The leisure centre will be a community hub, offering a range of facilities from sports to culture. Located within an established sports destination and a mature parkland setting, BRL sought to provide a fulcrum, bringing together all aspects of the park.
It was felt that if such a large building was simply dropped into the park it could produce a large visual and physical barrier detrimental to the park. The idea developed therefore of a central ‘winter garden’ extending through the building from front to rear. This winter garden would be a public thorough fare allowing access through the building with first floor galleries providing the controlled access to the upper level facilities.
